Overview

Expressions Parfumees is a French fragrance composition house founded in 1982 in Grasse by a team of professional perfumers. It composes across fine fragrance, personal care, home fragrance, and home care, exporting more than 83% of its production to over 50 markets. Acquired by Givaudan in May 2018, it operates as a stand-alone entity within the Givaudan group, retaining its own brand, creative teams, and 100% made-in-France production in Grasse.

History

Expressions Parfumees was founded in 1982 in Grasse, the historic centre of the French perfumery industry. Its founders were all practising perfumers, which gave the house an unusually hands-on creative identity from the outset - the composition work was not separated from leadership.

The company grew steadily as a mid-size independent, building a reputation particularly in natural fragrance compounds. It became the first perfume composition house to be awarded the Origine France Garantie label - an official French certification administered by Bureau Veritas - confirming that its production meets strict criteria for French origin and manufacturing.

In 2006, French investment firm Orfite became a reference shareholder, providing long-term capital while leaving management in operational control. The partnership gave the company the resources to expand internationally and invest in its Grasse facilities.

In December 2017, Givaudan entered exclusive negotiations to acquire the business, and the transaction was completed in May 2018. Givaudan cited the acquisition as reinforcing its reach to local and regional customers and strengthening its naturals capabilities. Expressions Parfumees continues to operate as an independent entity within Givaudan's Fragrance Division, under its own brand and leadership, with revenue at the time of acquisition running at approximately EUR 62.6 million.

Signature & specialties

The house is best known as a pioneer of natural fragrance compounds. Its NATCO range - launched well before naturals became mainstream in the industry - consists of perfumes made from 100% natural ingredients, designed to work in any product labelled natural or organic while meeting regulatory requirements. The house holds ECOCERT certification for natural perfumes, a globally recognised standard in over 80 countries.

Expressions Parfumees composes across four main application categories: fine fragrance (from luxury and niche to mass), personal care (cosmetics, shower gels, soaps, hair care), home fragrance (candles, diffusers), and home care (detergents, fabric softeners, surface cleaners). Its creative team draws on a palette that includes captive molecules alongside sustainable and upcycled raw materials.

The company operates from a 6,000 m2 production facility in Grasse capable of producing up to 280 compositions per day and around 8,000 tonnes per year, with an average lead time of six days. It holds Prodarom syndicate membership and Grasse Expertise association membership, aligning it with the region's collective effort to protect and promote Grasse heritage perfumery.
