Note Profile
Green tangerine is a citrus note that combines the juicy sweetness of tangerine with a sharper green, zesty and slightly unripe character. It suggests the peel and leaves of a just-picked tangerine rather than the fully ripe fruit. In fragrances it reads as bright, sparkling and very fresh, with a subtle bitter edge.
Olfactorily, green tangerine smells like a lively blend of sweet orange pulp, tangy zest and leafy green nuances. Compared with regular tangerine, it is less syrupy and more piquant, with facets reminiscent of tangerine peel, citrus leaves and a hint of aromatic herbs. It often comes across as juicy, sparkling and slightly bitter-gourmand at the top before fading into softer citrus and green tones.
In practice, green tangerine can be created by using tangerine essential oil modified with additional green, aldehydic or herbal materials, or as an accord built from multiple citrus and green aroma chemicals. The concept refers to a tangerine note that captures the smell of less-ripe fruit, peel and foliage, rather than a specific botanical variety alone. Perfumers may also allude to oils obtained from early harvest tangerines or blends including petitgrain and citrus leaf materials to reinforce the green aspect.
Perfumers use green tangerine primarily as a top note to provide a vivid burst of citrus that feels crisper and more modern than classic orange or tangerine. It works well in fresh, sporty and green compositions, as well as in contemporary colognes and citrus-aromatic blends. It pairs naturally with other citrus notes, leafy greens, aromatic herbs, white florals and light woods, where it lifts the opening and adds a slightly bitter, sparkling twist.
