Tom Ford's Vanilla Sex won the Fragrance Foundation's Fragrance of the Year for a reason: it layers a bright Vanilla Tincture accord against a deeper Vanilla Absolute, then grounds the pairing with sandalwood, jasmine absolute, iris and a discreet animalic note that keeps the whole thing feeling sensual rather than simply sweet. This oil delivers a genuinely rich, true-to-source vanilla note up top, which is the easiest part of the formula to get right, but the interplay between the two vanilla facets flattens into one dimension, and the sandalwood-jasmine-iris base is present only faintly, without the animalic warmth that gives the original its more grown-up, skin-like quality. A pleasant, straightforward vanilla rather than the layered, awarded original.
