Frequently uses natural materials and aromatherapy influences, and builds compositions using fine art concepts such as texture, color, light, and line. About

Dawn Spencer Hurwitz is an American indie perfumer and olfactory artist based in Boulder, Colorado, where she works under her own label, DSH Perfumes. She began designing perfume in 1991 while working at Boston’s ESSENSE Perfumery on Newbury Street, initially alongside art school studies in painting and applying fine art principles such as texture and color to fragrance composition. Hurwitz first launched her brand in 1993, with DSH Perfumes taking its current form in 2003. Over the years she has developed numerous conceptual and ready-to-wear artisan perfumes, consulted for niche retailers and brands including Luckyscent, Indiescents, Flora Napa Valley, Calypso, Jules & Jane, and Zents Spa Collection, and created synesthetic “Art Projects” perfumes for institutions such as the Denver Art Museum and the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art. She has also had DAWN-branded perfumes stocked at Barneys New York and Japanese boutiques like Isetan and Tomorrowland.
