France Born 0 Le Labo

Closely associated with Le Labo’s stripped-back, ingredient-focused aesthetic, Penot favors concepts built around a single named material and composed as unisex scents. His work at Le Labo emphasizes on-the-spot compounding in-store, limited city exclusives, and formulas such as Santal 26 and Santal 33 that highlight smoky, leathery sandalwood within a minimalist structure.

About

Fabrice Penot is a French perfume entrepreneur and co-founder of Le Labo. After working in fragrances for Giorgio Armani, he and Eddie Roschi founded Le Labo in 2006 in New York City, initially operating a single boutique on Elizabeth Street and relying on no formal investor funding or traditional advertising. Their concept centers on perfumes blended on the spot for each client and a minimalist, stripped-back aesthetic. Penot’s first scent concept for the brand was the candle Santal 26, which he later reworked into the perfume Santal 33, released in 2011 and widely described as the brand’s breakout hit. Le Labo was acquired by The Estée Lauder Companies in late 2014, with Penot and Roschi remaining responsible for the creative and scent development side of the business.
