France Born 0 Jean Desprez

Known mainly for rich, complex mid-20th-century French compositions, exemplified by Bal à Versailles, a dense, animalic, oriental-style perfume built from a very large number of ingredients. His work for his own house, such as Bal à Versailles and Etourdissant, leans toward opulent, classical French luxury perfumery.

About

Jean Desprez was a French perfumer and brand founder active in the mid-20th century. According to Fragrantica and multiple historical perfume sources, he created Bal à Versailles for his own house, Jean Desprez, in 1962; the scent became his signature work and is often described as one of the great opulent orientals of its era. Brand and retailer histories note that he founded his own perfumery house in 1928, releasing fragrances such as Etourdissant and Jardanel. His creations were issued under the Jean Desprez label, with Bal à Versailles later spawning multiple concentrations, including eau de cologne and eau de toilette versions credited to him as the original author.
