Boadicea the Victorious
Stephen is strongly associated with traditionally British fine perfumery, often creating bespoke and niche compositions for aristocratic and heritage clients. His work for brands such as Czech & Speake and Boadicea the Victorious emphasizes complex, high-end blends tailored to a luxury clientele, produced in small-scale, hands-on fashion from his Cotswold laboratory.
John Stephen is a British perfumer and owner of the Cotswold Perfumery, a family business founded in 1965 in Bourton-on-the-Water, England, where he has worked since the mid-1960s and still compounds and manufactures fragrances on site. He is widely known in the UK for creating fragrances for the English heritage grooming brand Czech & Speake and has also created personal and household scents for residents of Buckingham Palace, including Queen Elizabeth II. Stephen was responsible for composing the entire first line of fragrances for Boadicea the Victorious and continues to oversee their quality control and production. In addition to bespoke work and niche commercial projects, he teaches perfumery, having launched one-day courses in 2003, a three-day course in 2008 and a five-day Advanced Perfume Making course in 2022 at the Cotswold Perfumery.
