Oilily

Dutch fashion-led perfumes with fruity florals aimed mainly at girls, teens and the young-at-heart.

About Oilily

Oilily is a Dutch fashion and lifestyle brand founded in 1963 in Alkmaar, the Netherlands, by husband-and-wife team Willem and Marieke Olsthoorn. The company began under the name Olly, focusing on colorful childrens clothing before expanding into womens collections, bags, and accessories. Legal pressure from another childrens brand led to a renaming: two extra letters were added and the label became Oilily.

Fragrance entered the Oilily universe in 1989 with a scent created specifically for children and young teens, developed with input from around 50 girls aged 6 to 16 from the Oilily fan club. That original perfume later evolved into Oilily Flowers and is now marketed as Oilily Classic, retaining a strongly fruity-floral profile that reflects the brand’s playful, pattern-rich visual identity. Key notes across its flagship fragrances include bright citrus top notes such as Sicilian mandarin and lime, a heart full of jasmine, cyclamen, lily of the valley and assorted fruits, and a base of sandalwood, oakmoss and vetiver.

Oilily fragrances are positioned at the intersection of fashion accessory and entry-level designer perfume, with particular appeal to girls, teens and adults who enjoy light, youthful compositions. Distribution spans perfumeries, travel retail and fashion channels, often alongside the brand’s bags and womenswear. While the catalogue is compact compared with major designer houses, the Classic line in particular has built long-term recognition as a cheerful, everyday signature for those who identify with Oilily’s colorful, whimsical aesthetic.

Brand Evolution

Oilily started as a childrens fashion label and later extended its design language into womenswear, bags and accessories while keeping a focus on color and playful detailing. Fragrances arrived in 1989 with a child-focused cologne that later evolved into Oilily Flowers and subsequently Oilily Classic, maintaining the core fruity-floral structure while updating the branding over time. The perfume line has remained tight, with occasional reformulations and flankers rather than a broad yearly launch cycle, and continues to serve primarily as an extension of the fashion brand for younger consumers.

Quick Verdict

Oilily is a small, fashion-driven perfume player whose strengths are charm and wearability rather than sophistication. If you enjoy bright, sweet fruity florals with a youthful attitude, it delivers; if you want complexity or luxury materials, you will likely look elsewhere.
