ISIPCA
Versailles
Serious international students, including UK applicants willing to study in France, aiming for a professional perfumery or cosmetics career at the field's most historic address
ISIPCA (Institut supérieur international du parfum, de la cosmétique et de l'aromatique alimentaire) is the industry's oldest and most prestigious postgraduate perfumery school, founded in Versailles in 1970 by Jean-Jacques Guerlain. It has no UK campus or UK-delivered programme, so this entry is included as the prestige benchmark against which UK courses can be measured, not as a UK study option.
ISIPCA became Groupe ISIPCA in 1984 under sponsorship from the Versailles Chamber of Commerce, and from 1993 partnered with the University of Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines (UVSQ) to award state-recognised diplomas, including the European Fragrance and Cosmetics Master. In 2016, ISIPCA partnered with IFF to launch a three-year Master's in Scent Design & Creation - reported as the world's only accredited Master's programme specifically in perfumery, and the first fragrance-industry-sponsored one. A further MSc in Management of the Flavor & Fragrance Industry, run jointly with Université Côte d'Azur and EDHEC Business School, was accredited by the French Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation in March 2020.
Notable graduates include perfumers Francis Kurkdjian and Annick Ménardo. ISIPCA is also affiliated with the Osmothèque, the world's reference perfume archive, which researches and reconstructs historic formulas. The school now offers roughly sixteen courses across perfumery, cosmetics and food-flavour formulation, ranging from initial training to postgraduate degrees, most combining classroom study with an industry apprenticeship placement.
For a UK reader, ISIPCA represents the aspirational, professional end of the spectrum: genuine state-recognised accreditation and industry pedigree, but requiring relocation to France and, for several programmes, French-language study.
