Grasse Institute of Perfumery
Grasse
Committed international students, including UK applicants, wanting a trade-body-validated technical perfumery qualification in the historic Grasse region
The Grasse Institute of Perfumery (GIP) was founded in 2002 in Grasse by Prodarom, the French Fragrance Industry trade union and an IFRA member body, giving its qualifications direct industry-body backing rather than purely academic accreditation. It has no UK campus, so it is included here as a prestige, study-abroad option rather than a UK course.
Its flagship qualification is the International Technical Degree in Fragrance Creation and Sensory Evaluation: 18 months in total, running January to December in-centre followed by a six-month industry internship. The programme totals 1,200 training hours, 600 of them delivered by accredited creative perfumers or technical experts, and covers raw-material recognition (natural and synthetic), fragrance classification, accord-building, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis, cosmetic regulation, and marketing, alongside site visits to fragrance companies and botanical sources. Preferred applicants hold a Master's degree (sciences or marketing) and are aged 25 to 35 with some prior industry experience, though a Bachelor's is the stated minimum. Tuition is €13,500 plus a €150 assessment fee, and the certificate is validated by Prodarom.
GIP also runs shorter, more accessible options: short courses on fragrances, natural extracts, cosmetics, and taste/smell for those wanting a first look at the field; a one-week Fragrance Summer School ('Scents of Provence'); and, since 2020, live online courses for small groups of seven, each sent a full olfaction, formulation and application kit.
Based in Grasse - a town whose perfume-making know-how has UNESCO-listed cultural heritage status since 2018 - GIP offers hands-on access to the natural raw-material trade on its doorstep, a genuine point of difference from any UK school.
