Wales Perfumery

Wye Valley, Monmouthshire

Best for making a day or a weekend of it - a working perfumery lab looking onto a 500-year-old walled garden

Wales Perfumery

Wales Perfumery is the destination pick. Louise Smith established Wales' first perfumery near Monmouth after pivoting from the pharmaceutical and dental industry in 2012 and training with a perfumer in Paris, and she has been teaching from a lab that looks out onto a 500-year-old secret walled garden in the Wye Valley since 2019. Setting is doing real work here in a way it does not in a room above a pub.

The standard workshop is £95, with an exclusive make-your-own experience at £450 to £545 for people who want the unhurried version. Partner cabins at the same walled garden mean you can stay over, which is the tell that this is built as a trip rather than an activity slotted into a Tuesday.

The corroboration is good. Visit Monmouthshire lists it as a cultural activity, The Perfume Society carries a brand profile, and Louise launched her own collection, Natur, in 2022, drawn from the Welsh landscape. So the teaching comes with a working house behind it rather than a hired room and a kit.

The obvious caveat is geography. This is rural Monmouthshire - roughly forty minutes from Bristol or Newport, further from anywhere else - and that is the entire proposition. Nobody drives to the Wye Valley for a 90-minute blend on a lunch break. Go when the point is the day out, the garden and the pace; take the £95 workshop if you want the craft, the £450-plus experience if you want it slowly and alone.
