About

Jean-Claude Ellena is a renowned French perfumer and writer, born in Grasse in 1947, whose impact on modern perfumery is both profound and far-reaching. Beginning his journey in the fragrance world as an apprentice at Antoine Chiris at age 16, Ellena became the inaugural student at Givaudan's perfumery school in Geneva, where he mastered the essentials of fragrance creation. He went on to craft his first notable scent, First by Van Cleef & Arpels, in 1976. Over the decades, Ellena's career has spanned collaborations with leading houses such as Bulgari, Cartier, L'Artisan Parfumeur, Frédéric Malle, and The Different Company, which he founded. Most notably, from 2004 to 2016, he was the exclusive in-house perfumer for Hermès, where he created the celebrated Hermèssence collection and modern icons like Terre d'Hermès. Ellena's influence extends beyond his creations-he is a founding member of the Osmothèque scent archive and an acclaimed author, bringing a literary sensibility to his craft. Since 2019, he has served as Olfactory Creation Director for Le Couvent - Maison de Parfum, championing contemporary, nature-inspired haute parfumerie. His minimalist, transparent style and dedication to natural materials have inspired generations and reshaped the landscape of contemporary fragrance.
