Frequently described as daring and unconventional, Buxton’s style is exemplified by the sultry Moroccan souk accord of the original Comme des Garçons and the ink note of Comme des Garçons 2. His formulas often use striking, offbeat accords that remain wearable, favouring concise constructions that highlight a few powerful ideas rather than dense complexity.
Mark Buxton is an English perfumer, born in Derby and raised near Hamburg, who entered perfumery after Haarmann & Reimer (now Symrise) offered him formal training following a televised blind-smelling contest in Germany. He later worked for Symrise and, according to Fragrantica, is currently affiliated with Swiss company LUZI. Buxton is widely associated with Comme des Garçons, for which he created the original Comme des Garçons fragrance and Comme des Garçons 2, noted for its ink accord. His portfolio includes perfumes such as Salvador Dali Laguna and Paco Rabanne Black XS for Her. In 2008 he launched his own line “By Mark Buxton,” renamed Mark Buxton Perfumes in 2012, and he co-founded the niche retail and consultancy concept Nose Paris in 2012 in the Montorgueuil neighbourhood of Paris.
