Middleshade
Scottish place-led perfumery, blended in small batches on a lavender farm.
Middleshade is a small Scottish perfume house based at a working lavender farm in Kinross-shire. The perfumery grew from the farm's cultivation and distillation of aromatic plants, with the first lavender planted in 2015 and home-distilled oil in production by 2017. Rory and Marina Irwin now make the perfumes in small batches, blending, bottling and dispatching them from the farm.
The collection is shaped by place. Each perfume begins with a visit to the location behind its name, from Scottish islands and coastal settings to streets and landscapes in the central belt. The house grows lavender and other aromatic plants at Tarhill Farm, and uses these alongside materials from other growers. That connection to cultivation gives the range a distinctly local point of view, while the individual scents vary from green and woody compositions to florals, spices and richer, smoky accords.
Middleshade sits in the independent Scottish perfumery segment. It is founder-led, works on a small-batch scale and sells directly as well as through a limited number of independent shops. The farm is also open to visitors, bringing the growing and distilling work close to the finished fragrances. The house will appeal to wearers interested in place-led perfumery, botanical materials and small producers whose work reflects the landscape around them.
An indie, mid house known for green compositions.
The farm planted lavender in 2015 and was distilling its own oil by 2017. The perfumery grew from that agricultural work, developing into a small collection of place-inspired Scottish perfumes.
A Scottish farm-based perfume house with a clear sense of place, small-batch craft and a botanical thread.
