Scented

Scented is a small shop in the Italian Centre on Ingram Street in Glasgow, and it arranges perfume by category rather than by brand. Amber, floral, fresh, woody. You walk in, or land on the site, and the first question is what you want to smell like, not whose logo you are loyal to.

That is a bigger decision than it looks. Organising by house rewards whoever has the largest marketing budget, which is why most perfume retail looks identical wherever you go. Organising by category drops a first release from a two-person studio onto the same shelf as an established name and lets it win or lose on the smell. The stock bears that out: Paraphrase, Notes de Bas de Paje and Tsu Lange Yor are not names you arrive looking for. Prices start around £33, which is low for perfumery this obscure.

Their own description of the curation is award-winning, small batch or hard to find, but above all brands they rate. A small selection of lesser-known body, skin and hair care sits alongside, chosen on efficacy and ethics rather than to pad the range.

Every order gets complimentary samples, UK delivery is free over £50, and there are sample sets if you would rather commit to nothing yet. For a shop selling discovery, sending samples as standard is the least it could do and more than most manage.

A naming note for anyone searching: the shop trades as Scented, though the domain is scent-ed.com and the Instagram handle is scent_ed_.
