Overview

Givaudan is a Swiss multinational and the world's largest manufacturer of fragrances and flavours. Founded in 1895 and headquartered in the Geneva area, it composes the scent behind a vast share of the designer, niche and consumer fragrances sold worldwide. With 2025 sales of around CHF 7.4 billion, it is one of Switzerland's largest listed companies.

History

Givaudan was founded in 1895 in Zurich by the brothers Leon and Xavier Givaudan, relocating to Geneva in 1898 where it built its landmark factory in the suburb of Vernier.

In 1946 the company opened a perfumery school that would go on to train roughly a third of the world's working perfumers. It moved into flavours in 1948, and in 1963 was acquired by the pharmaceutical group Roche, which the following year also bought the historic Grasse house Roure - the firm behind the first true designer perfume, Schiaparelli's Shocking (1937).

Givaudan was spun off from Roche and listed as an independent public company in 2000. Its 2007 acquisition of Quest International made it the clear global leader in both fine fragrance and consumer-product scent.

Since 2014 it has acquired around twenty companies, among them the natural-ingredients specialist Naturex (2018) and the Grasse naturals house Albert Vieille, broadening its reach across naturals, active cosmetics and taste.

Signature & specialties

Givaudan's perfumery school, founded in 1946, is one of the industry's most influential training grounds and has shaped a large share of the world's master perfumers.

The house invests heavily in captive ingredients and naturals sourcing, and in proprietary discovery technology such as ScentTrek, which captures the scent profile of living plants in the wild for use in composition.

Its fragrance division composes across the entire market - from designer and niche fine fragrance to mass personal care - almost always under confidentiality, so its work appears on countless bottles without ever being credited on the label.
