Cubeb
Note Profile
About
A tailed pepper with camphoraceous, eucalyptus-like and woody-spicy facets. Used in perfumery since medieval Arab traditions.
Scent Profile
Cubeb has a spicy, peppery aroma with distinct camphoraceous and eucalyptus-like facets, underpinned by dry, woody nuances. Its scent is less sharp than black pepper, offering a cool, aromatic freshness that evolves into a warm, resinous base. Subtle hints of balsamic and herbal tones can emerge as it dries down.
Origin
Cubeb is the dried, unripe fruit of Piper cubeba, a vine native to Indonesia and cultivated in Java and Sumatra. The berries are harvested before ripening and then sun-dried, retaining their characteristic stalk or 'tail.' Essential oil is obtained through steam distillation of the dried berries.
Usage in Perfumery
Perfumers use cubeb primarily as a spicy heart or base note, valued for its ability to impart aromatic freshness and complexity to woody, fougère, and oriental compositions. It blends well with other spices, woods, resins, and aromatic herbs, and can enhance both masculine and unisex fragrances. Its camphoraceous aspect is sometimes used to add lift and clarity to heavier accords.
