Origin
Guaiacum coulteri, family Zygophyllaceae, a small tree of the dry forests of western Mexico and Guatemala. Its blue or lilac five-petalled flowers open from April to September when moisture allows. No supplier advertises an essential oil or absolute of this species, and no chemical-ecology paper reports its floral headspace, so what perfumery calls guayacan is a reconstruction rather than an extraction. The name is a trap in two directions. Guaiac wood in perfumery comes from Bulnesia sarmientoi, a different genus, so this is not the published guaiac-wood note. 'Guayacan' is also the Spanish common name for the yellow-flowered trumpet trees Handroanthus and Tabebuia in Ecuador and Colombia, which is a different plant again.
