Origin
Not an extract. Horse skin is a composed accord, built from castoreum-type materials or substitutes such as Castoreum 727, leather bases, civet-type animalic musks and salty-fatty notes. It names the smell of a horse's flank after a ride: sweat, natural oils, warm hair and tanned saddle leather.
Usage in Perfumery
A heart-to-base element in equestrian and animalic compositions. It pairs with leather, hay, straw and outdoor-green notes. Papillon's Epona (2024) is built around a horse accord. Its perfumer describes that accord as warm horse flesh: dusty, softly floral and animalic. She tied it together with violet, because her horses' coats smell of ionone.
