Orange jessamine is the flower of Murraya paniculata, a Rutaceae shrub. It smells of jasmine crossed with orange blossom and it is not citrus fruit. The one perfumer who has tinctured it says the jasmine sweetness arrives without indole, which is what separates it from true jasmine absolute.

A gardening source calls it a 'sweet jasmine-citrus blossom smell' and again 'like that of orange blossoms or a citrus-like jasmine'. A natural perfumer's tincture note calls it 'a jasmine-like sweetness with no indole'. Citrus is the blossom lift, not zest and not juice. Every source that names citrus names it as part of the flower's smell, and none describes a peel or a fruit character, so this facet is scored well below where a real citrus note would sit. Floral is the plain sweet-floral body that carries the rest, and it takes Wikipedia's bare 'fragrant' as well. Below the named line: sweet_vanillic for the repeated word sweet, honeyed by the orange-blossom kinship, green held low and wide because no source states a green facet, and clean_musk. Animalic is set with a narrow spread. That low number is not an assumed absence. One source states the absence directly, 'with no indole', so it is a claim someone made.

Origin

Murraya paniculata is a shrub or small tree in the Rutaceae, the citrus family, and it flowers all year in small fragrant clusters. It is the same family as Citrus but a different genus, and no part of the fruit is involved. No supplier sells an absolute or a concrete. The only first-hand perfumery account found is a natural perfumer's own tincture of the flowers. Anywhere the note appears it is either a tincture or a reconstruction built from orange-blossom and jasmine materials.

Usage in Perfumery

It reads as a heart floral in the orange-blossom register. Its use is to get jasmine sweetness into a composition without the indolic weight, which is the one property its sources agree it has.
