About

Rosalina is the steam-distilled oil of Melaleuca ericifolia, an Australian paperbark related to tea tree. The oil sold for perfumery is the linalool-rich type, also sold as lavender tea tree. A southern type rich in cineole also carries the name and smells closer to eucalyptus. The linalool type smells soft, fresh and floral, with a lavender-like sweetness, a woody touch and a gentle camphor coolness. It is rounder and less medicinal than tea tree.

Origin

Steam distilled from the leaves of Melaleuca ericifolia, an Australian paperbark and a relative of tea tree. The oil varies with where the plant grows. Northern oils are rich in linalool and are sold as lavender tea tree as well as rosalina. Southern oils are rich in 1,8-cineole. Commercial linalool-type oils hold about 38 to 47% linalool and 18 to 28% 1,8-cineole.

Usage in Perfumery

Used where tea tree's freshness is wanted without its antiseptic harshness. It adds a high, diffusive top note in trace amounts. It blends well with lemon and other citrus oils, with lavender, and with woody and herbal oils.
