About

Lemony, green evening flower

Scent Profile

Oenothera smells of a fresh, lemon-scented flower opening at dusk. A citrus brightness close to bergamot sits over a light floral heart with a hint of lily of the valley. A green, slightly herbal edge, like lavender, runs underneath, with a faint touch of spice. It stays light and airy rather than sweet or honeyed.

Origin

Oenothera is the evening primrose, a genus of plants whose yellow or white flowers open at dusk. The note is the scent of the open flower. No absolute or CO2 extract of the flower is sold, so in perfume it is an accord built to read like the flower. It is not evening primrose oil, the pressed seed oil, which has no smell.

Usage in Perfumery

Perfumers use it as a light, lemony floral note in the heart of fresh and green compositions. Weleda rebuilt the open flower from sandalwood, cardamom and magnolia, so it is an interpretation rather than a single material.
