About

Rowanberry is the fruit of the rowan tree, Sorbus aucuparia. Perfumery has no extract of it, so the note rebuilds the fresh berry. It smells tart rather than sweet, with a bitter edge closer to grapefruit peel than to jam.

Origin

Sorbus aucuparia, the ripe orange-red berry. The fruit is not extracted for perfumery, so the note is built as an accord. In the fresh fruit, benzaldehyde, (E)-2-hexenal and benzyl alcohol carry the aroma. Benzaldehyde smells of bitter almond, and (E)-2-hexenal of cut grass.

A rare note. Fragrantica lists 4 perfumes with it on 2026-10-10, among them Rowan bonfires (Костры рябин) and Winter berries (Зимние ягоды). No source says what role it plays in them.
