Bleu de Chanel earned its place as one of the best-selling men's fragrances by pairing a genuinely bright grapefruit-mint-pepper opening with an incense-cedar-sandalwood base that has enough lift to carry from a morning commute into an evening out. This oil reproduces the note list accurately, and the citrus-mint opening is fresh and true for the first while, but the alcohol-driven bloom that gives the spray version its reach simply is not there, so the incense-cedar-labdanum base reads warm and close rather than radiant. It is a genuinely wearable, versatile citrus-woody scent in its own right, but it is a quieter, more intimate version of a fragrance whose whole reputation rests on confident projection.
