Despite the name, Oriental reads more aromatic-herbal-modern than classical Eastern oriental. Pink pepper opens the perfume with a sparkling lively top - dry, spicy, peppery rather than sweet or fruity. The opening is brief; the heart takes over within minutes. The heart turns botanical: juniper oil for the dry gin-and-pine green-aromatic note, sage oil for the silvery-herbal counterpoint. The pairing reads adult and dry, like a cocktail's aromatic spine - the brand's stated 'crisp, herbal elegance' framing is accurate. There is no floral or fruity heart, which is what differentiates Oriental from the rest of the Marien line. The base anchors in warm amber and smoky leather: amber for the long honeyed glow, smoky leather for the velvety dark close. The amber-leather pairing is what the 'oriental' name is doing - the base reads more classical-oriental than the herbal heart does.
