Santal du Pacifique takes the sandalwood soliflore in a gentler direction than most niche houses attempt. Composed by Mathieu Nardin and released in 2016, it sources its central material from the Pacific islands between Asia and Oceania under a replanting programme the brand describes as fifty new trees for every one felled. The opening is the surprise: a carrot-seed note, earthy and faintly sweet, which reads more like warm root vegetable skin than anything vegetal or sharp. It works as a bridge into the heart, where violet and orchid throw a soft, powdery floral veil over gurjun balsam, a resin that supplies the smoky, slightly camphorous edge sandalwood needs to avoid turning bland. The base is the point of the whole exercise: a genuinely creamy Pacific sandalwood, milky and rounded, held in place with a clean musk. There is very little sweetness and no gourmand trickery. Performance is moderate; it hugs the skin for six to eight hours with a soft aura rather than a projecting cloud, which is normal for this material and not a flaw. It works best in cooler weather when the creaminess reads as comforting, though it never becomes heavy enough to be unwearable in spring. Comfortable at the office and equally at home as a quiet evening scent, it sits in the niche woody-creamy lane, and is a good answer for anyone who found Mysore-style sandalwood too dry or too expensive to chase.
