Note Profile
Gurjun Balsam is a natural resinous perfumery material obtained from Dipterocarpus turbinatus. It is used as a warm balsamic base note with woody, piney, and mildly spicy facets.
Gurjun Balsam smells warm, woody, sweet, and dry-balsamic, with resinous depth and a lightly piney edge. Depending on quality and dose, it can show patchouli-like, camphoraceous, and faint spicy nuances, while remaining smoother and less aggressive than many coniferous materials.
It comes from the resin or oleoresin of Dipterocarpus turbinatus, a tree native to Southeast Asia, especially India, Cambodia, Indonesia, and nearby regions. The material is typically collected from the resin and then steam distilled or otherwise processed into a perfumery oil or balsam fraction.
Perfumers use Gurjun Balsam mainly as a base-note fixative in woody, balsamic, pine, and oriental styles. It blends well with incense, patchouli, cedar, labdanum, tobacco, florals, and citrus materials, where it adds depth and prolongs evaporation.
