When To Wear

Best Seasons

Best For:
Spring Summer
Also Works:
Fall

Lemon, lavender, apple and sea notes are cooling, transparent materials that read best in warm weather. The moss and sandalwood base gives it a little autumn range but nothing for deep winter.

Best Occasions

Best For:
Office Casual Sport
Also Works:
Date

A clean citrus-aromatic with marine notes is the standard shape for work, daily wear and warm days, and it is inoffensive in shared spaces. It is too light and too common to carry a formal evening.

About

Private Grey is the most conventional fragrance Saint Hilaire sells, and that is not entirely a criticism. The opening is bright and clean: lemon and bergamot supply the citrus lift, lavender adds a familiar barbershop freshness, and geranium contributes a green, slightly metallic sharpness. The heart softens things considerably, with apple giving a crisp fruit sweetness and jasmine and lily of the valley providing a dewy floral transparency over an early cedar note. The base is where the fresh-masculine template shows itself most plainly, combining sea notes for an airy saline effect with moss for a dry green underpinning and sandalwood and amber for warmth. It is the aromatic fougere shape that has been the default for men's fragrance since the 1990s, executed without surprises. Fragrantica users rate it 3.36 out of 5 across 22 votes, which reads about right: pleasant, legible and easy rather than memorable. It performs best in mild weather where the citrus and marine notes stay sharp, so spring and summer are its window, and it is well suited to daily wear, work and warm-weather occasions. Its lane is the cheap, safe, everyday bottle you reach for without thinking.
