Scentleys Sam is an Extrait de Parfum. Sam opens with Cardamom and Cinnamon, settles into a heart of Pepper, Saffron, and Cumin, and dries down to a base of Cedar, Patchouli, Vanilla, and Tobacco. Scentleys's Sam carries an Acquired verdict, a spicy-led wear.

Sam mirrors the cardamom-cinnamon-saffron-tobacco skeleton of Penhaligon's The Blazing Mister Sam closely enough to be recognisable, though the dupe's spice reads brasher and the tobacco-vanilla base thinner than the Portraits original's rich, cumin-heavy depth.

About

Sam is Scentleys' interpretation of The Blazing Mister Sam, the 2018 entry in Penhaligon's Portraits collection built as a loud, spice-driven oriental. The dupe opens with a hot cardamom and cinnamon rush, leaning harder into cinnamon sweetness than the original's more balanced spice blend, before a black pepper, saffron and cumin heart adds the earthy, slightly animalic warmth that gives the real Blazing Mister Sam its distinctive character. The base settles on tobacco, vanilla, cedar and patchouli, aiming for the rich, smoky sweetness the original is known for. Scentleys captures the overall spicy-oriental silhouette well in the first couple of hours, when the cardamom-cinnamon opening is doing most of the work, but the cumin and saffron read thinner as the extrait develops, and the tobacco-vanilla dry-down loses some of the density that makes the niche original feel expensive. As a UK-poured oil concentration it performs well for a dupe, six to eight hours with noticeable projection for the first few hours before settling closer to skin. A strong choice for wearers who want the loud, spice-forward personality of the Portraits line at a fraction of the price, with the understanding that the depth and complexity trail the original.
