Place-led artisan perfumery: fresh, mossy chypre construction in Chienoir, amber and floral-musk night scents in Hibou and Chouette, and a light, crisp style in Boutique. Concepts are worked out in paint before the perfume is built.

About

Amanda Beadle is a self-taught artisan perfumer based in Sussex and the founder of the perfume house BedeauX. She wanted to go to art school but was steered into accountancy, and she worked in finance while bringing up her family. Perfume was a hobby for years before it became her work, and she is also a painter who thinks about scent in pictures.

She has no formal perfumery degree. She says she took up perfumery about ten years before 2025 after a day workshop in London, then spent a couple of years completing every course and workshop she could find. Her own site says she studied perfumery and founded BedeauX to make bespoke perfumes for individuals and businesses. Her studio is in Lindfield, West Sussex.

Her debut, Chienoir, began as a commission for a vineyard in the South Downs and launched in 2017. It won the Artisan category at the 2018 Art and Olfaction Awards, and Beadle says the win let her work in the business full-time. She followed it with Hibou, a bright orange amber, and Chouette, a soft floral musk, both launched in 2018 as a pair of night-time perfumes and now archived. Her most recent perfume, Boutique, is a light, crisp scent inspired by a fashion boutique.

Her work is led by place and mood. She often paints a scene first to fix the flavours and textures she wants, then builds the perfume from a palette that includes sandalwood, oakmoss, cardamom, linden blossom, ylang-ylang and mimosa. She calls experimentation the key to an original artisan perfume. Alongside her own range she takes bespoke commissions.
