Sussex artisan perfumery from Amanda Beadle, led by an award-winning vineyard chypre and bespoke commissions

About BedeauX

BedeauX is a small Sussex perfume house founded by Amanda Beadle, a self-taught artisan perfumer who came to scent from a career in accountancy and a lifelong habit of painting. It sells a short range of its own perfumes and makes bespoke perfume for individuals and businesses.

Beadle began perfumery as a hobby, took a day workshop in London and then spent a couple of years on every course she could find. The brand's first perfume, Chienoir, started as a commission from a friend who runs a vineyard in the South Downs and wanted a scent that captured the place. It launched in December 2017 and won the Artisan category at the 2018 Art and Olfaction Awards. Beadle says the win let her work in the business full-time. The website names the company as Bedeaux Ltd and dates it from 2017.

The style is led by place and mood rather than a set formula. Chienoir is a fresh, aromatic chypre in which opoponax takes the place of the usual labdanum, set among oakmoss, patchouli, neroli and juniper. Hibou, a bright orange amber, and Chouette, a soft floral musk, were launched in 2018 as a pair of night-time scents and are now archived. Boutique is a light, crisp scent built on cardamom, iris, sandalwood and musk.

BedeauX sits in independent British perfumery: one maker, a studio in Lindfield, sales through its own website and markets, and bespoke work on top. It suits wearers who like green, mossy chypres and want a perfume with a story behind it rather than a designer launch.

Brand Evolution

BedeauX began with Chienoir, a commission for a Sussex vineyard launched in December 2017, which won the Artisan category at the 2018 Art and Olfaction Awards. Hibou and Chouette followed in 2018 as a night-time pair and are now archived. Boutique, a lighter urban scent, joined the range later. The founder now works in the business full-time and also takes bespoke commissions.

Quick Verdict

A small, personal Sussex perfumery with an award-winning chypre at its core. Try Chienoir first; Boutique suits anyone who wants something lighter and easy to wear.
