Auguste Michel

Auguste Michel

Sources describing Red Moscow attribute to Michel a rich, classical floral style built around accords of bergamot, ylang-ylang, jasmine, rose and vanilla, aligning his work with the grand aldehydic-floral tradition that also shaped contemporaries like Chanel No. 5.

About

Auguste Michel was a French perfumer who built his career in Imperial Russia. He initially worked for Alphonse Rallet & Co., a major Russian perfume house that supplied the imperial court, alongside Ernest Beaux. In 1913 he left Rallet to join rival house Brocard, another official supplier to the Russian court, where he created a perfume for Empress Maria Fedorovna known as Bouquet de l’impératrice (Bouquet of the Empress). After the Revolution he remained in Russia while the Brocard family emigrated, and the firm was nationalized and renamed Novaya Zarya. Michel became chief perfumer of Novaya Zarya, and in 1924 he launched the iconic Soviet fragrance Red Moscow (Krasnaya Moskva), widely believed to be based on his earlier Bouquet de l’impératrice.
