Henri Robert was known for marrying classic French perfumery with modern sensibilities, creating elegant yet accessible fragrances that often challenged prevailing gender norms and set new standards for sophistication.

About

Henri Robert was a renowned French perfumer and chemist born in 1899 in Grasse, the heart of the perfume world. Trained by his father Joseph Robert, the chief perfumer at Chiris, Henri began his career at Chiris in 1919, working alongside legendary figures such as Vincent Roubert, Ernest Beaux, and Henri Alméras. He later joined Parfums d'Orsay and created the influential Le Dandy in 1923, a fragrance that blurred gender boundaries and became popular among both men and women of the 1920s. After François Coty's death, Robert became Chief Perfumer at Coty, honoring Coty's passion for lily of the valley with Muguet des Bois in 1941. During World War II, he relocated to New York, continuing his work for Coty before eventually moving to Les Parfums Chanel. In 1952, he succeeded Ernest Beaux as Chief Perfumer at Chanel, where he created modern icons such as Pour Monsieur, No. 19, and Cristalle EDT. Robert's classic yet innovative approach has left a lasting mark on the industry, and his legacy is further reflected through his family, being the uncle and great-uncle to other notable perfumers. He passed away in 1987, but his influence endures, inspiring new generations of perfumers.
