Maria Candida Gentile
Gentile’s style emphasizes a high proportion of natural essences, often obtained through manual distillation, and the use of rare, high‑quality raw materials. Her compositions are classically structured yet niche in character, frequently narrative and place‑inspired, as in Hanbury (inspired by Lady Dorothy Hanbury’s gardens near Ventimiglia) or the spicy-rose-vanilla alchemical construction of Cinabre. She positions her work as an alternative to large‑scale, synthetic-heavy production.
Maria Candida Gentile is an Italian perfumer from Liguria who studied chemistry at the University of Florence before training at the Grasse Institute of Perfumery, where she is cited as the only Italian maître parfumeur to graduate in a 30‑year span. Before founding her own niche house Maria Candida Gentile in 2009, she composed fragrances such as Vittoria Apuana for Profumi del Forte and Bateau for Farmacia SS. Annunziata. Her eponymous line, launched in 2009, includes creations like Hanbury and Cinabre and is known for using a high ratio of natural materials, manual distillation and rare ingredients. She has also created bespoke fragrances and ambient scents for VIP clients including Madonna and Caroline of Monaco, and for brands such as Ferragamo and Kartell.
