Le Labo
Roucel’s creations are renowned for their sensual, bold accords, often featuring lush white florals, amber, and musk. His work is distinguished by a daring yet harmonious blending of classic and contemporary elements, delivering fragrances that are instantly recognizable and deeply evocative.
Maurice Roucel is widely regarded as one of the most influential perfumers of his generation, celebrated for his innovative style and profound impact on modern perfumery. Born in Normandy, Roucel began his career in 1973 as a chromatography chemist at Chanel, working under the legendary Henri Robert. Largely self-taught, he transitioned from chemistry to creative perfumery, eventually developing a distinctive signature characterized by sensuality, boldness, and a pioneering use of floral notes-especially magnolia, for which he is often credited as an initiator in the field. Over the decades, Roucel has crafted iconic fragrances for a broad array of prestigious brands, from Guerlain, Hermès, and Lancôme to niche houses like Éditions de Parfums Frédéric Malle. His award-winning career includes honors such as the Prix François Coty and the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, reflecting his lasting influence on the industry. Since 1996, he has been a leading perfumer at Symrise, continuing to shape the olfactory landscape with creations that balance technical expertise and artistic vision.
