About D. R. Harris

D. R. Harris is a London chemist and perfumer founded in 1790 and still trading from St James's Street, where it describes itself as the oldest pharmacy in the capital. The story begins just before 1790 at No. 11 St James's Street, where Harris's Apothecary set up shop. The house takes its name from two proprietors: Henry Harris, a surgeon, and Daniel Rotely, an early pharmaceutical chemist. For more than two centuries it has served the gentry and the court of St James's, and it has held royal warrants since 1938. It is a family-owned business, still working from its traditional shop at 29 St James's Street, which keeps much of its original furniture.

Fragrance sits inside a wider range of shaving soaps, creams, aftershaves and skincare. The earliest products were English Lavender Water, Classic Cologne and English flower perfumes, and the colognes still follow that tradition. They are written in the classic English manner, with citrus, lavender, herbs, woods and musk.

Marlborough pairs cedar and sandalwood with citrus and spice. Windsor sets vetiver, leather and pepper under a citrus opening. Albany is built on lavender, musk, orange, bergamot and lime. More recent releases add a lighter modern touch: Twenty Nine uses clove, cinnamon and geranium, English Flannel is a bright orange and neroli cologne, and St James's 1684 is a pear, rose and woody musk scent from 2024.

D. R. Harris sits in the traditional English tier of niche perfumery, alongside historic London houses such as Penhaligon's, Trumper and Truefitt and Hill. It suits men and women who want a well-made classic cologne with real provenance, and who like their scents light, clean and familiar rather than experimental.

Brand Evolution

D. R. Harris began as an apothecary around 1790 selling lavender water, classic cologne and English flower perfumes. Its colognes have kept that character, with newer releases such as Windsor and Twenty Nine and, more recently, English Flannel and St James's 1684 adding a lighter modern touch.

Quick Verdict

A reliable classic: well-made English colognes with real provenance. Start with Marlborough or Windsor for the traditional barbershop style, or St James's 1684 for something softer.
