Prescriptives
Defunct Estée Lauder cosmetics brand best known for the 1980s green-fruity fragrance Calyx.
Prescriptives is an American cosmetics brand created in 1979 by The Estée Lauder Companies as their second brand launch after Clinique. It was conceived to focus on highly individualized color cosmetics and skincare, using tools such as custom blending and “color-printing” consultations to match complexion and undertones with unusual precision. The brand operated as a division within Estée Lauder, rather than as an independent company, and sat alongside other Lauder portfolio names at department store counters.
Prescriptives entered fine fragrance in 1986/1987 with Calyx, composed by perfumer Sophia Grojsman. Calyx quickly developed a devoted following for its vivid green-fruity character that contrasted with the heavier florals of the era. Even after Estée Lauder decided to end Prescriptives’ retail distribution around 2010 and wound the brand down fully by 2011, Calyx survived: it was moved into the Aramis fragrances division for continued production and later appeared at other Lauder-family counters such as Clinique and Aramis.
Although Prescriptives is largely remembered today as a makeup line, its fragrance legacy rests almost entirely on Calyx. The scent is frequently cited in reviews and essays as an influential late-1980s composition that pushed a cleaner, more sparkling style of fruity-green florals while still offering notable performance. This single perfume, and its survival after the parent cosmetics brand was shuttered, has kept the Prescriptives name relevant among fragrance enthusiasts.
A designer, premium house known for green compositions.
Prescriptives started as an in-store, service-driven color brand with bespoke foundation blending, and its fragrance arm reflected the same forward-looking approach when it launched Calyx in the mid-1980s. Over time, the cosmetics line underperformed relative to other Estée Lauder brands, leading to the shutdown of in-store counters in 2010 and a final wind-down by 2011. Calyx, however, was kept in production under the Aramis fragrances division and later re-positioned within the broader Lauder portfolio, maintaining the Prescriptives name primarily as a historical reference tied to that single scent.
In fragrance terms, Prescriptives is a one-hit brand whose reputation rests almost entirely on Calyx. If you enjoy assertive, green, fruity florals with real character, it is still worth seeking out despite the brand’s defunct status.
