What a fragrance manufacturer does

Most perfume brands do not make their own fragrance. They write a brief, and perfumers at a specialist house compose the scent, often competing with other houses for the job. The largest of these houses are Givaudan, Firmenich, IFF and Symrise.

Because one house works for many clients, the same lab can sit behind a designer launch and a niche release, and a perfumer can move between rival brands. Each house also keeps its own patented aroma molecules, called captives, that only its perfumers may use for a time. That shared toolkit is one reason perfumes from unrelated brands can smell alike.

Some brands keep a perfumer of their own instead, among them Chanel, Hermès and Guerlain, so not every perfume has an outside manufacturer behind it. Each house's page covers its history and specialties and lists the perfumes we credit to it.
