Origin
Steam distillation of the aerial parts of Mentha suaveolens, leaves and flowering tops. The plant is native to the Mediterranean and widely cultivated. The oil runs pale yellow to colourless. Its leaves are covered in soft trichomes, which is where the other common name, woolly mint, comes from. Those leaves hold fewer menthol-producing glands than peppermint or spearmint, so the oil is lower in menthol and menthone and higher in fruity esters.
Usage in Perfumery
A top-to-heart modifier. It adds mint freshness without the cooling-medicinal edge that menthol-heavy mints impose, so perfumers reach for it when mint should be an accent rather than the theme. It sits in green-aromatic structures, soft citrus-herbal builds and fresh feminine compositions. Named partners are green apple, bergamot, basil and chamomile.
