Cajuput Tree
Note Profile
About
Soft, fruity camphor-herbal leaf
Scent Profile
Cajuput opens camphoraceous and clearing, close to eucalyptus but softer and less icy. A herbal body follows, like crushed rosemary and sage, with a green, pine-needle freshness. A slightly sweet, fruity side keeps it gentler and less medicinal than tea tree. It settles to a dry, faintly spicy woodiness, with a thin smoky trace at the very end.

Origin
Cajuput tree is Melaleuca cajuputi, a paperbark tree of South-East Asia and northern Australia, sold in the trade under the older name Melaleuca leucadendron var. cajuputi. Its oil, called cajeput, is steam-distilled from the leaves and twigs. The oil is led by 1,8-cineole, with alpha-pinene and smaller amounts of linalool and nerolidol, and the balance varies with origin.
Usage in Perfumery
Perfumers use it as a fresh, clearing top-to-heart accent in aromatic, fougère and herbal-woody accords. It gives a eucalyptus-like lift with less chill and less medicinal bite than tea tree, and its slightly sweet, fruity side helps it sit next to citrus and lavender.
