About

Saro is the leaf oil of Cinnamosma fragrans, a shrub endemic to Madagascar, where it is called mandravasarotra. It smells fresh and camphoraceous, close to eucalyptus but softer and sweeter. A faint spicy, woody edge and a hint of lemon sit under the cineole. It is a top note, used mostly in aromatherapy.

Fresh, crisp and camphoraceous, close to eucalyptus but softer, warmer and sweeter. A faint spicy, woody edge recalls bay laurel. As the cineole fades, a soft lemony, fruity sweetness and a light floral trace remain. It carries an aromatic, herbal lift beside the cool camphor.

Origin

Steam distilled from the fresh leaves of Cinnamosma fragrans, endemic to Madagascar, where it is known as mandravasarotra. Its main component is 1,8-cineole, at 38 to 53 per cent in the supplier analyses found. Limonene and the pinenes come next. A linalool-rich chemotype is also reported.

Usage in Perfumery

A cineole-fresh top note, used mostly in aromatherapy. Its make-up is close to eucalyptus and ravintsara. Suppliers pair it with eucalyptus, niaouli, juniper berry, cardamom and nutmeg.
