About

Christmas Rose is Helleborus niger, a winter-flowering perennial in the buttercup family. It is not a rose and not in the rose family, despite the name. No horticultural source consulted attributes any scent to the plant at all. The note as perfumers use it is a construction around the idea of a poisonous white winter flower, and the two commercial treatments found do not agree on what that smells like.

Scent Profile

Floral is the only claim both readable brands and Parfumo's category make in common, and it is capped at just over half because nobody has described the actual flower. White_floral comes from the one brand that names its materials: Erbaflor's bouquet is magnolia, lily and lily-of-the-valley, which is a white-floral list rather than a generic floral one. Cooling_mentholic is the other brand's whole idea. Ingrid Starnes says 'Camphor notes make for an unsettling beguiling floral', and camphor is the only material that brand names. It is scored below the florals, not above them, because one brand builds on it and the other shows no sign of it, and asserting it higher would be taking one interpretation as the note. Green is Erbaflor's 'tonalita fresche ed erbacee di The verde', a fresh herbaceous green tea running through the bouquet, and it is also the only facet that fits the RHS description of leathery dark evergreen foliage. Clean_musk is Erbaflor's 'fondo piacevolmente muschiato', a pleasant musky base, named once by one brand. Below the line sit powdery, a soft-focus reading of a white bouquet that neither brand states, aquatic_ozonic for the cold winter transparency both treatments imply without saying, and honeyed. All three are inferences and their spreads say so.

Botanical name, thematic note. Helleborus niger, Ranunculaceae, native to the Alps and the northern Apennines, flowering from midwinter to early spring. No supplier lists a Helleborus niger absolute, extract or oil. Nothing here is distilled from the plant.

Usage in Perfumery

Six Parfumo placements across four brands, plus 38 under the German 'Christrose'. Parfumo files it under floral notes. Two brands were readable. Erbaflor's 'The Christmas Rose' builds it as magnolia, lily and lily-of-the-valley over green tea and a musky base. Ingrid Starnes' 'Hellebore' builds it from camphor for an 'unsettling beguiling floral'.
