Clematis smells green and vine-like, more stem and crushed leaf than petal. A soft floral note sits over the green, lifted by a bright, slightly waxy aldehydic sparkle. A faint bitter-almond trace runs through it, never sweet. It dries down to a pale, clean musky trace.

Origin

Clematis is a climbing vine whose flowers mostly carry little or no scent, and no essential oil or absolute of it is sold. The note is a built accord. One restored base, a 1930s Roure clematis base, is sold today by a raw materials supplier.

Usage in Perfumery

Perfumers build clematis from green-leaf notes, a trace of benzaldehyde, clean musks and a little white floral. The restored base is used as an aldehydic floral in pink floral compositions and in recreations of vintage perfumes.
