About

Green, herbal anise with a tarragon bite

Scent Profile

Estragole smells like chewing a fresh tarragon leaf: green, herbal and anisic, with a liquorice sweetness. It is greener and more pungent than anise, and less purely sweet. A fresh, almost camphor-like bite opens it, with a faint medicinal edge. It softens into a warm, liquorice-green middle.

Smell words come from published sources.

A given perfume with this note may use this material, or something else.

Origin

Estragole, also called methyl chavicol (CAS 140-67-0), is a single aroma molecule. It makes up 60 to 75% of tarragon oil and is the defining aroma compound of French tarragon. It is a colourless liquid.

Usage in Perfumery

Perfumers use estragole as the character molecule for tarragon and exotic basil accords. IFRA restricts it in finished products, so it is used at low doses.
