About

Green Notes is a group note. It is the smell of a leaf broken between the fingers, and it is what a brand prints when the specific herb is not the point. It is sharp rather than sweet, and it reads as something living rather than something cooked.

Scent Profile

Green and stemmy, with a strong aromatic herbal note through it. A cool mentholic lift at the top, and a faint dry woodiness underneath where the stalk turns to twig.

Origin

No single source. The note is the weighted common ground of 56 published green notes - mint, basil, galbanum, petitgrain, thyme, tarragon and artemisia lead it. Galbanum is the extreme of the family and the reason the group has an edge to it at all.

Usage in Perfumery

A green accord sits in the top and the early heart, where it makes a composition read as natural and unripe. Perfumers use it to cut sweetness, to stop a floral turning syrupy, and to give a fougere its spine.

Notable Perfumers

Perfumers known for using Green Notes include Sarah McCartney.
