Aromatic herbs and botanicals
Herbal notes evoke the aroma of fresh or dried green herbs such as basil, sage, rosemary, and thyme. They are characterized by crisp, aromatic, and sometimes slightly bitter or camphoraceous facets, often with earthy or peppery undertones. The scent can evolve from bright and invigorating to more subdued and woody as it dries down.
Herbal notes are derived from the essential oils or extracts of aromatic plants and culinary herbs. These materials are obtained through steam distillation, solvent extraction, or by using natural isolates from herbs cultivated in temperate and Mediterranean regions.
Perfumers use herbal notes primarily in the top and heart of compositions to impart freshness, complexity, and a naturalistic character. They blend well with citrus, woody, and floral notes, and are common in fougère, aromatic, and green fragrance families.
