Gardenia leaf is a fresh green top note, not the waxy white flower the plant is named for. It smells of crushed leaf with a light lemony brightness. A faint waxy, aldehydic lift sits under the green rather than a sparkling one. It can read sharp and cool, with a slight woody dryness. It sits well alongside apple, apricot and lily of the valley.

Origin
The leaf of Gardenia jasminoides. No supplier page found sells a gardenia leaf oil or absolute, so the note in perfumes is most likely a perfumer's accord. One study hydrodistilled the leaf. Its oil is about half pentadecanal, which smells fresh and waxy, and 12.3 per cent geranial, the lemon-smelling half of citral. No study describes how the whole leaf oil smells. The flower is a different material and is published as gardenia.

Samourai Woman Sakura Tea pairs it with cherry blossom, cherry leaf and green apple. AtelierPMP Clean 01.1/SN puts it with wormwood, galbanum and mandarin. Use it as a fresh green lift over fruit and light florals. Use gardenia when the white flower is the point.
