Jasmine orchid is a jasmine-scented orchid flower. Which orchid is not settled. Two species are independently documented as smelling of jasmine: Epidendrum falcatum, with 'a delicate, haunting scent of jasmine in the morning', and Cycnoches chlorochilon, with 'a penetrating jasmine fragrance'. Neither is the genus usually attached to the commercial name. The note as perfumers use it reads as a lighter, cleaner jasmine carried on the soft powdery body of an orchid.

No orchid is commercially extracted for a jasmine-scented absolute. The note is a reconstruction. Jasmine-scented orchids are real and are recorded by growers in at least two genera, Epidendrum and Cycnoches, both outside Dendrobium. Orchid fragrance is not one smell: the same grower sources report Dendrobium anosmum as raspberry, D. tetragonum as vanilla, caramel and butterscotch, and D. kingianum as sweet clover, honey and pollen. So the commercial note names a character, not a harvested material.

Usage in Perfumery

A heart note. It gives a white floral that is lighter and cleaner than a jasmine absolute, with a powdery finish that lets it sit in soft floral and skin compositions without the indolic weight. One grower source records the character shifting through the day, from jasmine in the morning to Easter lily or narcissus by afternoon, which is the sort of turn a perfumer builds in deliberately.
