About

Magnolan is a Symrise molecule that smells of magnolia, peony and lily of the valley with a grapefruit lift. It is a transparent, dewy floral rather than a heavy single flower, and Symrise sells it as the bridge between a fresh citrus top and a light floral heart. Trade sources add a green facet and a faint lychee-rhubarb fruitiness that the manufacturer's own sheet does not state.

Scent Profile

Floral leads because both sources give a cluster rather than one flower: magnolia, peony and lily of the valley together, none of them dominant. White_floral is the magnolia and lily-of-the-valley half of that cluster, and Symrise's own use note says the material imparts naturalness to white flowers. Citrus is specifically grapefruit, named by both sources and by Fragrantica, and it is what makes this a bridge material rather than a plain floral. Green comes from Fraterworks, which states green facets outright, and is consistent with the peony and lily-of-the-valley references, since both published notes carry green above. Under the line: aquatic_ozonic is the transparent, dewy freshness that Symrise implies with 'transparent floral elements' and Fragrantica states as 'floral dewy freshness', fruity is the lychee and rhubarb undertone that only Fraterworks names and only as subtle, sour is the rhubarb edge of that same claim, and dry_woody is set low on purpose because Symrise's woody remark is a blending recommendation and not an odour claim.

Origin

A synthetic aroma molecule, CAS 27606-09-3, made by Symrise. The manufacturer's datasheet gives a five-word olfactive description: floral, magnolia, peony, lily of the valley, grapefruit, with a recommended use level of 0.5 to 20 percent. It is not an extract of magnolia and shares no material with the published magnolia note; it is named for the flower it imitates. This repository's candidate-decisions record shows a second supplier trade name, Neomagnolan, resolving to the same CAS, so those two names are one molecule and Neomagnolan should never be minted as a separate note.

Usage in Perfumery

A floral heart material. Attested on 10 Fragrantica entries and 4 Parfumo entries across 4 brands, and in all 4 Parfumo pyramids it is a middle note: W.Dressroom Green Earth, Eight & Bob Agneta, Nina Ricci Deci Dela 2007 and Laboratorio Olfattivo ExpLOud. Two of those four are the same woody-resinous formula and place it beside cypriol, gardenia and frankincense, which is Symrise's stated pairing with dry woody materials showing up in real pyramids. Fraterworks calls it an excellent canvas material, meaning it is used in bulk to give a formula floral body rather than as a recognisable single effect.
