About

Aquaflora is a muguet material with water in it. The lily-of-the-valley shape is the whole point, but it is carried on a fresh green, watery frame rather than on the waxy sweetness of the older muguet aldehydes. IFF calls it transparent and names cyclamen as the second flower. The Perfumer's Apprentice lists it as green, marine and fruity, which is the same smell described from the outside. It reads as a lily-of-the-valley seen through water.

Origin

A captive synthetic from IFF, sold under the trade name Aquaflora. The molecule is octahydro-4,7-methano-1H-indene-5-acetaldehyde, CAS 1339119-15-1 and 1338815-87-4. It is a single compound, so its smell does not vary by harvest or origin the way a natural extract does. IFF supplies it stabilised with tocopherol and describes it as ultimately biodegradable. It has no natural source and is not an isolate of anything.

Usage in Perfumery

IFF positions it as a more natural-smelling replacement for the older muguet workhorses, Lilial and hydroxycitronellal, and says it works at low levels. Its stated blending partners are Kharismal Super, Liffarome, Peomosa and Helional, all green, watery or floral-aldehydic materials, which is where the note sits in a formula. IFF's own impact chart puts it high in the top and medium in the heart and base, and calls its performance linear. Attested 1 time on Fragrantica and 2 times on Parfumo across 2 brands, so it is a formulation material that has only just started appearing in published note lists.
